They lived in an apartment about two blocks away, where my grandmother said they made wine in the bathtub of an empty apartment. But Nardo remembered that on the evening of the shooting, the bakery "owner" (one of the Aiellos) had sent him inside to pick out a bag of treats while he (Aiello) and Tony spoke together outside. Nardo remembered that he was thrilled -- free goodies! What luck!

But Tony saw the curtained limo down the street idling at the curb and realized what was about to happen, so he took his son by hand and said goodbye to the owner. Nardo said his dad then clasped his arm with an iron grip and told him in a low, grim voice not to look back, run or scream, no matter what happened -- just keep walking.

Nardo didn't understand what his dad was saying, of course, but then machinegun fire ripped into the bakery behind them and the limo raced away. But Grandpa Tony and Nardo just walked on, as calmly as they could, not looking back.

That night, Nardo said, his father paced and fretted while his mother cried. And eventually two torpedoes came to the apartment to talk to Tony -- he was very tall, big man for a Sicilian, very identifiable. They led him away as my great-grandmother Catherine cried and begged them not to take him, but they assured her everything was fine and they would return her husband to her.

So Tony went for a ride with them, during which they said that the police were investigating an incident in the neighborhood, and that they would appreciate it if Tony didn't say anything to the authorities when they came around asking questions. Tony assured them that he hadn't seen anything, didn't know anything, and he would never speak to the authorities.

And that was it, they brought him back home to the apartment. Tony worked to get his family out of Little Sicily and they eventually moved to western Michigan, where I heard the story of my great-grandfather's non-witnessing of the Aiello bakery shooting from my Uncle Nardo, some 50 years ago after Thanksgiving dinner at the home of his sister, my Grandma Katie.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-58563640551252225.post-38397195531644763462020-07-02T18:12:40.348-05:002020-07-02T18:12:40.348-05:00My name is Joe Andrew Aiello. My aunts and uncle...This is VERY interesting to me! My aunts and uncles told us about their father Vito Lunetto, owning a candy store in Chicago during the 20’s or 30’s. My uncle Joe saw someone executed in the basement of the store. Vito drove a Duisenberg and my grandmother had a fur coat. On the earnings of a candy store? Obviously, there was a mob connection. On Ancestry someone wrote to me to tell me how, after Vito ran off to Wisconsin with his girlfriend the mob kept my grandmother and 8 kids fed and clothed. My grandmother Maria Galioto, must have been a cousin to Joe Aiello. I went to Bagheria last Oct. to see my grandmother’s birth place and certificate. Her mother was Dominica Aiello. The address of the house where she was born still has Aiello on the mailbox. Thank you for all the research! One day as she approacged the bakery, a large black car pulled up and opened fire at the men sutting at a table inside. She said they used to play cards there. She ran home terrified. I can't find out any info on this. I don't know how accurate her memory was on this. She said she was very young at the time.
