It appears the main home was razed and that portion of the lot sold to new owner who built home on it. However, behind the newer home can be seen an old building, either a remnant of the original Leopold home or more likely a carriage house which still exists. The tiny more modern "garage" off the alley is often represented as the Leopold's garage--unlikely--it looks modern and is very small---a wealthy family like these folks would have had a carriage house---- 4754 is in fact designated for the old building behind the newer home which fronts on 47th St rather than Greenwood.smaryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07749013424926020854noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-58563640551252225.post-73203748085692690042017-06-12T09:37:52.290-05:002017-06-12T09:37:52.290-05:00I have been working on a graphic novel about Natha...I have been working on a graphic novel about Nathan Leopold's blind cellmate at Stateville Prison in 1936. Matt Rizzo was blinded during a robbery and sentenced to Stateville, arriving on the day that Loeb was slashed to death in the shower. Leopold was put in the bug cell to keep him safe. Rizzo was also sent to the bug cell. The book is called "The Hunting Accident" and is available for pre-order on Amazon. It's interesting because Rizzo was suicidal being uneducated and newly blind. leopold taught himself to read braille so he could teach Rizzo how to read and then immersed him in reading Dante, Homer, Virgil, Shakespeare, et.al.Davidhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08386637275140638885noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-58563640551252225.post-46012408182506653462017-03-07T21:28:13.260-06:002017-03-07T21:28:13.260-06:00Thank you for the info on the fate of Leopold fami...Thank you for the info on the fate of Leopold family members, as well as the photo of the house. I wonder about the Loebs, as well. I guess there's a difference between being intellectual and being smart. These two murderers were punished for killing that poor child Bobby Franks, and Loeb paid the price with a violent death. But that darn Leopold didn't suffer as much as he should have. Today, the sentence would be life without parole. That would be justice as well as punishment.Jayalayhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08769266284712252349noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-58563640551252225.post-45352796834919843442015-09-27T14:19:09.735-05:002015-09-27T14:19:09.735-05:00I grew up at 45th & Ellis, decades after the &...I grew up at 45th & Ellis, decades after the "Crime of the Century, between 1953 and 1983. I bought (and lost) do many books on Chicago, almost all of it history or historical photos. I have been to the photo room sty the historical society and talked to every bartender or cab driver who felt like talking and always asked them about a crime, a morbid event, or just the countless changes in the city's various neighborhoods, the building's architecture, famous restaurants and clubs, Daley's machine, the Outfit and more. I would bike or drive to places just to stare -- at first because perhaps it was the location of a crime, then later it would just be something like one of the many (slowly disappearing) "signs to nowhere", like the ones you could find in an alley on a brick wall that at one time could be seen by the whole area.

I don't know where you went out why you stopped writing, but I hope this site never goes anywhere.

Paulhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12112324920415484708noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-58563640551252225.post-87890637358047216362013-12-18T11:40:32.240-06:002013-12-18T11:40:32.240-06:00The glasses are at the Chicago Museum. The glasses are at the Chicago Museum.Lyndia 2https://www.blogger.com/profile/12112936892822349562noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-58563640551252225.post-72204697492025229372013-07-28T14:57:50.558-05:002013-07-28T14:57:50.558-05:00What became of Leopold's glasses? The Franks mansion was on Ellis I believe, nearly within a few yards West of the Academy. I also worked at the Windemere Hotel (East) during the summers of attending JMA. Also met Leopold where he was the X-ray technican at the Stateville Prison in 1950. I ordered it through a library in 1980, and have read it many times since then. Also have Clarence Darrow's "The Story of My Life," in which he devotes a chapter to the famous "Crime of the Century." I have always been interested in this case, but have not learned anything more about it in all the years since. How very interesting to google his name and read the very interesting article and accompanying comments. I do remember being told about his crime history and was quite privately shocked to meet such a person. However, I remember my impression of him as being a very quiet, subdued and even self-effacing kind of person, who seemed far removed from the image I had of a murderer.
